At Betterment, we empower people to do what’s best for their money. Whether you’re spending, saving, or investing, Betterment is built to help our customers live better. Our product provides a suite of world-class financial planning and investment tools that are available to everyone, not just the ultra-wealthy.

Our product is designed to help increase customers’ long-term returns and lower taxes for retirement planning, building wealth, and other financial goals. We imagine our product as a self-driving car for finance – you tell us your destination and we’ll automate the process of getting you there safe and sound.

Lives Their Mission

Our mission drives us to do the best work of our lives. We empower people to do what’s best for their money so they can live better. Having a safety net for whatever life throws at you leads to peace of mind, and peace of mind leads to more engaged, more fulfilled, happier people. A world full of happier people sounds like the kind of place we want our kids to live in. We don’t believe we’re in the business of money, but instead, the business of happiness.

We’re here to make our customers’ lives better, and along the way, we also might better our own. Our team works hard each day to serve our users. We see through their eyes and we use data to help understand them. We work closely with our customers; asking questions, hosting focus groups, listening intently, and aggregating their insights to create new ideas.

We intend to matter to our customers. By delivering extraordinary communication, convenience, and services personalized to their needs, our customers trust us at the center of their financial lives.

Supports Professional Development

The environment we’ve created at Betterment is purposely positioned to build long-term success for each team member. We encourage all members to take ownership of their career growth by providing initiatives that develop and hone their skill sets. We empower our people managers to guide and support each of their team members throughout these efforts.

We take the time to thoughtfully create a clear picture of individual career growth opportunities, as well as support in getting there. When working across tasks, team members are given a high level of autonomy, but also have the necessary opportunities for built-in checkpoints. This maintains clear lines of communication that are open and foster organic goal-tracking.

As the digital marketing landscape rapidly evolves, each team member is given a dedicated learning and development budget which they can use for skill training or conferences. Alongside this initiative, we’ve also created an internal mentor program, and even host BetterU Days – dedicated days that foster personal growth across a variety of topics and skills.

Work/Life Balance

We understand that a healthy work/life balance can lead to more productive and fulfilled team members. We’ve built a culture with balance at the core of how we operate. With flexible working hours and even remote working arrangements, it’s possible to do your best work whenever and wherever you’re most effective.

Both vacation and personal days off are uncapped and paid. Our team works hard, and in return are encouraged to travel and relax whenever they need. This helps each individual recognize when it’s time to pause and recharge.

We also provide up to 16 weeks of parental leave for the primary caretakers, or 12 weeks of leave for the secondary caretakers. We understand how important these first months can be new additions to the family.

Encourages Ownership Of Work

We hire great people and empower them with the context, resources, and freedom they need to make our business better. If we see a problem, we take ownership of it. It’s why things have worked as well as they have, and it’s how things will continue to get better.

The goal of good leadership is autonomy. We set clear goals, we measure outcomes, and we assist where necessary. We always strive to avoid micromanagement. We expect our team to be able to self-manage at a certain point.

We hire people who tell us what to do, not the other way around. We want our marketing team to bring creativity and ideas to the table. We don’t ask for permission, we just work with others to get it done.

Our marketing team are experts at gleaning insights from cross-platform data and customer feedback. With an intuition for our product, we’re capable of creating the most engaging and clear communication with our customers as possible.

We allow the freedom to create and manage go-to-market digital strategies that drive customer acquisition and product adoption. With the infrastructure in place to measure performance on an ongoing basis, we’re continually eager to iterate based on data-driven outcomes.

Friends Outside Of Work

The Betterment team are more than just co-workers, we’re an extended family. Eating, drinking, and enjoying each other’s company is a defining characteristic of our culture. We host potluck family dinners at one of our favorite times of the year – Thanksgiving. We’d traditionally host these team dinners at our own homes (with 40 people in Jon’s apartment in 2012) as long as we could. As we’ve grown, we host these in our teams new home – the office.

We’re always looking for ways to share experiences outside of the office. Whether it be happy hours hosted each week, or various team activities that get us together to play (soccer is a team favorite).

Each year, we also host two annual trips that bring our international team together. These are a special time to hang out and play fun games. Our Winter trip is often held at a ski resort, and our summer retreats are always in unique places where we can kick back, relax, and get to know each other.

Team Is Diverse

We believe we get the best ideas when we hear from a diversity of voices. We work to cultivate an inclusive culture that recognizes and respects diversity of experience, background, thought, and behavior. We’re dedicated to building an environment that fosters a sense of belonging for all of our employees. We have a long way to go, but we won’t stop until we get there.

It’s important that our team reflects the diversity of our customers as we continue building a service for everyone. A diverse internal culture encourages innovation so much more than a homogeneous one. Diversity shouldn’t trickle down to the product, it should be a foundational part of its development.

Marketing Is A Priority

We intend to matter to our customers, and marketing is a means of sharing this passion. We constantly aim to see through their eyes, and we use data to validate our assumptions. With a fluent understanding of our customers unique paint points and behaviors, we can tailor the most relevant and meaningful digital strategy that shares value and builds long-term relationships.

Our digital marketing team embodies a test and learn mentality by developing and iterating across unique digital channels. We’re deeply data-driven, systematic, and creative. This combination of core skills allows us to drive meaningful customer growth with positive ROI.

Just because we know our way around a compound interest equation and a tax statement doesn’t mean we have to be dull. Our digital marketing team works hard to redefine how the financial industry can delight customers. With unexpected service, design, and care at every turn, we’ve become the market leaders when it comes to engaging customers.

Cross-Department Collaboration

As a collective team, we work closely together to solve problems from unique angles. Our office has been thoughtfully designed with seating assignments that shift frequently. We sit in teams of four for six months at a time. When the marketing manager sits next to the senior product designer, as well as the newest software engineer, and the most tenured member of our people team – everyone develops a better understanding of the important each role plays.

After each six month period, we intentionally mix things up. A simple thing like a change in work environment can frequently lead to a bigger change in perspective. This shift encourages new opportunities to brainstorm, ideate, build, and push our thinking and perspectives. It also helps foster transparency, camaraderie, and respect between our different departments.
